Love, luck, and destiny are the themes explored in Gimme Shelter, a series of hand-dyed and embroidered textile works by Allison Manch examining the pioneer spirit. Through a variety of female characters, whether raised by wolves and or simply dealing with the challenges of survival, Manch examines her romantic notions of the American west. With pieces ranging from stitched Richard Avedon portraits to images of her own family, the artist examines the commonplace quality of both found textiles and photography. Layers of mythology build up around the characters and their journeys, as stories separated by time are held together by landscape, engaging the viewer in the ultimate western acts of rediscovery and re-creation. References to popular music are present throughout the series, songs that are now deeply a part of the fabric of western imagination. Like the portraitized characters, the songs have journeyed through real and imagined space, and deal with the ubiquitous nature of the emotions of uncertainty. Allison Manch was a recipient of a 2006 and 2009 Artist Trust GAP grant. She received her master's degree from the University of Washington, and has previously shown at Gallery 4Culture, SOIL Gallery, Grey Gallery and Lounge and the Frye Art Museum.
